Description

An Arizona Gray Squirrel (Sciurus arizonensis) peers out from the safety of its nest in the hollow of a large Cottonwood tree at the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area in Southeastern Arizona.

I was photographing birds in the area when I noticed him scurrying about the trunk of the tree. He wasn't sure whether or not to go into his home, for doing so would tell me where his nut stash was located. He finally relented and entered the tree trunk, feeling much safer being able to watch me from within the safety of his home. After a couple of minutes he deemed me not to be a threat to life or food and disappeared completely into his nest.
