Description

The Kitchen of the Hughes House, a historic Victorian pioneer home near Port Orford in Curry County, Oregon, featuring the custom-made free-standing iron kitchen range.

The stove is massive. It was forged in some major city (possibly San Francisco) and shipped to Curry County and the Hughes House was built around the stove. The stove had a direct connection to a chimney, which not only vented smoke, but also carried heat to the upper floors. If you look closely, you can see a flue jutting out of the upper part of the chimney, a precursor to the modern thermostat.

The Kitchen was the central hub of the Hughes House. Here, Jane and Annie prepared meals for the family and hired help. There were doors to the Pantry, Dining Room, Laundry Room, Bathroom, and Main Hallway.
