Description

This is one of the now-abandoned homesteads that can be found in Ramsey Canyon, a popular tourist destination just outside of Sierra Vista in the Huachuca Mountains of Southeastern Arizona. It's a large structure, built by John James in 1911 to replace his original log cabin because he wanted more room for his wife Ernestine and son Harvey.

It was a probably a beautiful home in its heyday, being situated on a hillside where the grassy meadow meets the edge of an oak forest. Most of the paint has peeled off the sun-dried hand-hewn boards, and some angles are not as straight as they used to be. It's still an imposing structure, a testament to the character and resolve of those who homesteaded this region back when the West was young.
