Description

An Arizona Gray Squirrel (Sciurus arizonensis) grooming itself on a tree limb at Brown Canyon in the Huachuca Mountains of Southeastern Arizona.

While I usually encounter a squirrel or two on my hikes, on this day I stumbled onto a whole troop of them. They were busy grabbing nuts from the Juniper trees and cracking them open to get the tasty morsel inside. The discarded shells sounded like rain on the thick blanket of oak leaves that covered the forest floor.

In between foraging they'd chase each other around in spirals up and down the Juniper and Oak trees, and practice leaping off of rocks onto unsuspecting play mates that were foraging on the ground, which usually resulted in a good chase up into the nearest tree.
